Loco Bean Coffee Roasters

I began working with Loco Bean in March 2021. Founder Harry Davis is a fan of craft beer and had seen some of my other work online. He started his roastery with a view to combine artisanal coffee with bold craft beer branding.

He wanted to find a character to represent his brand; a mascot. We explored a few different options before settling on a bear . Harry is from Warrickshire, whose county flag features a bear.

I began thinking about what kind of character the bear could be and trying to link that into the world of coffee. Perhaps he is a connoisseur; a refined gentleman... perhaps "Lord Warrick". He could be an explorer and collector, and within his collection... "The Loco Bean". This could be a rare and mystical artefact (think Indiana Jones), the jewel of his collection and one that is always in danger of being stolen... by The Chameleon thief! (chameleons are found in the regions where the coffee is grown)

These characters started inspiring the sort of mood and feeling of the story we could tell; having these two characters sparring against each other. We felt there could be great storytelling potential here and we could have these characters going head-to-head over a long period of time, providing plenty of material for more labels.

We started to establish a "film-noir" feel; lord, spy, thief, master-assassin - pic stuff!! A Sherlock and Moriarty kind of feel...

The final coffee bags have a lovely classy feel; rich, glossy and decadent. Loco Bean is just starting out but I feel we have a lot of scope with these characters and I look forward to continuing their journey in the future.
